Thousands of homes across the Burnham-On-Sea area were without power on Sunday evening, February 21st, following a major power cut.

Western Power Distribution told Burnham-On-Sea.com that a total of 10,000 homes in Burnham, Highbridge and the Berrow area suffered an outage at 7.38pm following a high voltage fault.

John Chivers, spokesman for Western Power Distribution, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A total of 10,000 customers in Burnham did experience a short inturruption to power supplies lasting several seconds this evening.”

“The problem was caused by a fault with our 33,000 volt system. We automatically switched supplies to a back-up system to restore power within a few seconds and minimise disruption.”

Burglar alarms were set off across the area and several sets of traffic lights were knocked out of action.
