‘Positive talks’ ongoing over future of Burnham’s Princess theatre

-

Talks to safeguard the future of Burnham-On-Sea’s closure-threatened Princess Theatre are still ongoing with a positive announcement expected over the next few weeks.

Sedgemoor District Council has said it is ‘fully committed’ to the Princess despite controversially abandoning its procurement process to find a new owner earlier this year.

Talks are currently underway between the Town Council and District Council about the future of the building – with ‘confidential’ discussions taking place in recent weeks.

Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Claire Faun confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “Negotiations are positive and ongoing.”

And Town Council Clerk Eileen Shaw added: “Talks are ongoing with the district council about several options.”

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported on the district council’s surprise decision to pull the plug on its procurement process in September here. Among the bidders for the building were S&D Cinemas, which runs Burnham’s Ritz Cinema, and The Friends of The Princess, which operates the hall in conjunction with Sedgemoor District Council.

Sedgemoor District Council has been responsible for the loss-making Princess Theatre in Princess Street since a local Government re-organisation in 1974.
