Sixteen year-old Anna Kevan was selected by a panel of judges as Burnham-On-Sea’s new Carnival Queen on Saturday night (July 31st).

At a packed ceremony held in Burnham’s Princess Theatre, the King Alfred School student was chosen by the four judges to lead this year’s carnival parade.

She will be accompanied by two Princesses, Katrina Doyle and Agatha Parrott, who were also chosen on Saturday night.

Anna said afterwards she was “very honoured” to have been picked. “I’m really delighted to have been selected – I can’t wait for the big day in November!” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

Burnham Lions Club, who organised the event, said they were pleased with the response to this year’s competition, with five youngsters running for the position of Queen and 21 for the role of Princess.

The group’s Andrew Bryant told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Entries were well up on last year and there does appear to be growing interest in the event, which bodes well for the future.”

Each of the candidates was asked a series of questions by the commentator, followed by one question from the judges, who included Malcolm Borland from Burnham Carnival Association, Mike Barsby from Brean Leisure Park, Julie West from N-Hance Hair Studio and Dawn Grey from the BEES drama group (Burnham Excellent Entertainment Society). Burnham’s Mayor and Mayoress were also there to open the show as special guests.

The new Queen and Princesses will lead the Highbridge and Burnham Carnival Procession on Monday November 8th.

Those in the running for the two Princess positions were Kayley Brown, Lauren Caines, Bethanie Collins, Hollie Collins, Abigail Clifton, Kody Crosby, Rowen Crosby, Katrina Doyle, Catherine Emerson, Sarah Gratton, Charlotte Hockey, Kaitlin Jarvis, Charlotte Johnson, Daisy May Kilduff, Lily Ann Kilduff, Bailey Morgan, Agatha Parrott, Abigail Peake, Holly Russam, Phoebe Sealey and Ellen Smithers
