Rubbish collectors ‘struggling’ in Burnham-On-Sea after snow

-

Recycling and rubbish collections face continued disruption today in Burnham-On-Sea as Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) crews struggle to get through the snow and ice to carry out collections and catch up with past missed services.

Collections are currently restricted to roads free of ice and snow. While some key routes in the Burnham area are clear and have been gritted, snow and ice is still affecting many side roads.

To free all staff and vehicles for recycling and rubbish services, SWP has suspended its garden waste collection service and apologised to customers for the inconvenience.

Despite several days of severe weather conditions, some recycling and rubbish collections are taking place in the Burnham area today (Thursday).

“The advice to residents remains to place recycling and refuse out when safe to do so. SWP guidelines say that it will aim to return to pick up fortnightly-collected materials within five working days and weekly-collected materials within two working days,” spokesman Nick Cater told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“SWP will deploy all available resources this week to maintain collection services and to catch up in any areas missed. However, the scale of the disruption may make it impossible to meet the two or five day periods prescribed in guidelines.”

“In that situation, householders should put their recycling and rubbish out on the next scheduled day, which they should check as it is likely to have changed because of Christmas and New Year arrangements (listed below).”

Meanwhile, Highbridge Recycling Centre has re-opened after being closed for several days due to the snow and ice.

.Holiday rubbish collection changes:

The scheduled changes for refuse collections affected by the Christmas and New Year holidays are as follows:

– Usual collections and catch-ups continue up to and including Friday 24th December.
– With one exception, all collections from 27th December to 7th January occur one day later.
– The exception is Friday 31st December, whose collections will take place on Sunday 2nd January.
– Normal collections resume on Monday 10th January 2011.
