Proposals to pedestrianise Burnham-On-Sea’s High Street could soon be back on the cards if Sedgemoor District Council is successful in its claim for £150,000 of regenaration compensation.
The district council said this week that it has begun a claim from the South West Regional Development Agency after it dealt the plans a severe blow last year when it did not award expected funding to the town.
Now, having spent almost £350,000 on plans and consultants for Burnham town centre regeneration projects since 2002, the council wants some of its money back.
If successful, the cash would likely be redirected into the Civic Pride project, which as previously reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com, would see Burnham High Street paved over in an effort to bring in more shoppers.
Several Burnham town councillors this week cautiously welcomed the news, saying they will await a final decision before boosting their hopes.
