Film reviews: What’s on at Burnham-On-Sea Ritz Cinema

-

Burnham-On-Sea film enthusiast Molly Harding, who was recently nominated for the national award ‘Young Film Critic of the Year’, reviews the latest crop of films showing at Burnham’s Ritz Cinema in Victoria Street this week…

Due Date (15)

Peter Highman (Downey Jr) is flying home to be with his expectant wife. But when after crossing paths with camp wannabe actor Ethan “Tremblay” (Zach Galifanakis), he is struck off the no fly list and loses all sources of hope, he is forced to ride with Ethan on an intense shenanigan stuffed ride across America.

There’s some outrageously funny antics-a-plenty in this film but also missed opportunities to bring this from the street to satisfactory to the highway of hilarity.

From Todd Phillips, director of “The Hangover,” I think everyone was hoping for something just as good, but “Due Date” just doesn’t pack the punch that “The Hangover” does.

But comparisons aside, there are some genuinely laugh inducing moments including Ethan and dog Sonny’s late night “antics,” a fantastically choreographed hysterical escape from Mexico and a scene in which, at a stop at Peter’s friend’s house, they drink coffee unaware of its true contents.

But I went in to “Due Date” expecting a consistant gag-filled film but instead only a few main incidents which can mostly be seen in the trailer. The whole audience did seem to enjoy the film but it fails to reach its full potential.
