Burnham-On-Sea Rotary Club raises £620 for Haiti quake victims

-

Members of Burnham-On-Sea Rotary Club raised more than £600 for people affected by this month’s earthquake in Haiti last week.

The volunteers were at Sanders Garden World in Brent Knoll to help raise funds to send out ‘ShelterBoxes’ to the homeless in Haiti.

Peter Burks, General Manager of the garden centre, explained: “This is a horrific natural disaster and we think it is vitally important to help the people of Haiti at this tragic time.”

“The Burnham Rotary Club is trying to raise as much cash as possible and we were delighted to help in order to send ShelterBoxes out to the homeless people in Haiti. The volunteers managed to raise £620 during the week.”

The boxes, which are sent out to victims of natural disasters, contain tents, blankets and vital necessities, such as water purifying tablets and cooking equipment, to help with day-to-day living. A ShelterBox, which can last a family for up to six months, was also on display at the garden centre.
