Burnham-On-Sea rugby club unveils £25k floodlights project

Burnham-On-Sea Rugby Club has this week unveiled plans for a £25,000 project to introduce more flood lighting at its ground in the town.

The club, which is based at Burnham's BASC ground, wants to purchase three new floodlights and upgrade its existing lighting in order to enable its members to play more in the evenings over the winter.

Rugby Club Chairman Caine Harding told "We'd like the new lighting to be in place for November so that it's ready for the winter rugby season, but that's dependent on us getting funds."

"Come Christmas, the training pitch is churned up and we need to use the second team pitch for training. The current lighting for that area is very poor, which is why we need the new flood lights."

The club has applied for 'RLT3 funding' from local councils, to try and secure cash set aside for community use by local property developers.

Town councillors in Burnham have this month given their support to the scheme, but the club now needs support from Sedgemoor District Council to secure the money.

"We're delighted the town council has supported us, and just hope that the district council now backs the plans too," added Mr Harding.
