England rugby players visit Burnham-On-Sea schools tournament

-

Young rugby players from Burnham-On-Sea, West Huntspill, Berrow and Pawlett battled it out at the annual Sedgemoor and Mendip Sports Partnership ‘TAG’ rugby festival, held in Burnham, on Wednesday (March 24th).

England women’s international players Catherine Spencer and Sophie Hemming were the guests of honour at the special event, which was held at the BASC Ground.

The two ladies, fresh back from gaining a record fifth Six Nations championship, helped with coaching at Wednesday’s event and chatted with the 80 children about their sporting work.

The eight primary school teams – which included Burnham’s St Joseph’s and St Andrew’s – were put through their paces by the duo at a coaching session before they competed for the tournament title in the afternoon, watched and cheered on by spectators.

The competition was eventually won by the St Andrew’s team – pictured right – after they beat Berrow Primary School 20-15.

During the lunch break, Catherine and Sophie met the youngsters, answered questions, and signed autographs.

Event co-ordinator Paul Shepherd told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s fantastic that the girls gave up their time to come along, especially after such a gruelling international campaign. They were always willing to get involved and help out and guide both the players and the young leaders.”

“Their attendance raised both the profile of Woman’s Rugby and also the World Cup being held her later in the year. They were superb ambassadors from their clubs, country and the game. My thanks to them, the young leaders and Burnham-On-Sea Rugby club for hosting the event and making it such an enjoyable day.”
