Burnham-On-Sea misses out on £5m government seaside funding

-

Burnham-On-Sea has missed out on £5m worth of government money to boost employment, businesses and skills in seaside towns across England.

The government announced on Thursday (March 25th) that in the South West region the windfall will be shared by Plymouth, Cornwall, Torbay, Bideford and Minehead as part of a funding injection to 25 coastal resorts around the UK.

The scheme is part of a wider regeneration strategy published by Communities Secretary John Denham following recent research that found many coastal areas have suffered in the economic downturn. The Conservatives said the £5m figure was a “drop in the ocean”.

The announcement was a blow to Burnham-On-Sea, which also missed out last year on vital regeneration funding from the South West Regional Development Agency when it did not award expected funding to the town.
