Highbridge rail bridge shut as black ice takes its toll

-

Treacherous black ice prompted police and highways bosses to closed this usually busy bridge in Highbridge on Thursday evening (January 7th).

With temperatures plunging to minus 7 degrees Centigrade, the bridge at Highbridge Railway Station, running between Bank Street and Walrow, was shut by Somerset County Council.

Traffic had struggled to move over the structure earlier in the day due to thick ice – leading to the closure.

Although County Council Highways workers have been gritting main roads in Burnham and Highbridge, as pictured, many side roads and pavements remain in a dangrous condition.

Temperatures were predicted to struggle to rise only a few degrees above zero, with a maximum temperature of 2°C.
