Eighty swimmers will dash into the sea at the start of Burnham-On-Sea’s annual Stert Island Swim on Sunday (July 18th).

The unique 2,400m race will this year start earlier than normal at 12 noon.

The participants will swim from Burnham beach to Stert Island and back in front of large crowds of watching spectators along The Esplanade.

Organiser Sara Hudghton from West Country Triathletes told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Everything is set for a good event. We’re just hoping for good weather – it was a touch choppy today.”

“We’ll have a full capacity of participants and are hoping for a big crowd of onlookers.”

The event is being supported by the Town Council, BARB, the RNLI, Natural England, Taunton Canoe Club and St John Ambulance Service.

West Country Tri-Athletes took over the organisation of the annual summer event in February 2008 after Sedgemoor District Council said it could no longer afford to run it.
