Woman killed on tracks at Highbridge Railway Station

A middle-aged woman was killed at Highbridge Railway Station this morning (Friday), bringing rail services to a halt through Somerset.

Shocked commuters on the northbound platform told how the woman - who is believed to be local - got onto the track as a passing train was approaching and was instantly killed.

Police and ambulance crews rushed to the station shortly after 11am and the area was sealed off, as pictured here, while investigations got underway.

British Transport Police spokesman Brian Price told "I can confirm that a woman has died after being struck by a train at Highbridge rail station."

"The incident was reported to police at 11.08am. BTP officers, colleagues from Avon and Somerset Police and paramedics from the Great Western Ambulance Service attended, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene."

"The incident is currently being treated as non-suspicious. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the woman's identity and the full circumstances surrounding the incident."

He added that a file will be prepared for the coroner. The train involved was the 9.25am Plymouth to Aberdeen service. The line was handed back to Network Rail at 12.22pm.
