Farm raid near Burnham-On-Sea uncovers £500,000 cannabis factory

Police have uncovered a high-tech drugs factory in a quiet village near Burnham-On-Sea.

A huge haul of cannabis with a street value estimated at £500,000 was recovered from a farm in Tarnock, a usually sleepy village on the A38 near Rooksbridge, on Wednesday.

One man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of producing cannabis and the police investigation is now underway.

Three large industrial units, which were each dedicated to cultivating hundreds of plants of cannabis, took almost two days to dismantle last week.

An investigation to find out what links the premises has to the criminal underworld and where the drugs were destined is now underway by local police, a criminal investigation team and a financial investigation team.

Avon and Somerset Police spent two weeks staking out the quiet buildings with infrared-equipped equipment. They also scrutinised electricity usage before raiding the premises.

Officers told that they believe the well-established operation, which had 260 growing plants and 470 already harvested, had been in operation for at least a year. Police said the haul is the biggest of the century in the Somerset West police district.
