Burnham-On-Sea's new MP sworn in during opening of parliament

Burnham-On-Sea's new MP, Tessa Munt, was sworn in during the official state opening of parliament on Tuesday (May 25th) and enthusiastically welcomed measures in the Queen's Speech.

Responding to the Queen’s Speech, Tessa told "I’m genuinely pleased that the priorities we campaigned on locally will now be put into action by the coalition government."

"I promised that as your MP I would work to create fairer taxes, a fair start for every child, a new green economy and, crucially, to clean up politics. Today's Queen’s Speech makes those promises a reality."

"I hope that measures to clean up politics by reforming party funding, parliamentary privilege and having an elected Upper House will help restore trust in politics. And I believe it’s absolutely right that the people of the Wells constituency should be able to sack me if I do something wrong."

Reflecting on the ceremony to confirm her officially as MP, Tessa added: "I was ‘sworn in’, pledging to serve the Queen, but it's the voters who really 'call the shots'. On entering the Chamber, the clerks recognised me as the new MP who had already asked questions about how to change the rules."

"As I shook the Speaker’s hand he welcomed me to Parliament and said 'I hope you will be an active and energetic Member of this House'. I replied, 'I'm afraid I certainly will be!'"

Tessa has turned her thoughts to her 'maiden speech' in the House of Commons in which she is expected to highlight the ongoing battle to get a set of controversial proposed National Grid electricity pylons moved.

Tessa will also shortly be holding a tour in which she will hold surgeries right across the constituency. Details will be announced soon.
