Burnham-On-Sea Tourist Centre meeting to be held this evening

-

A new ‘working party’ of local tourism bosses is to be formed tonight (Thursday 28th January) when talks to save Burnham-On-Sea’s Tourist Information Centre from closure get underway.

The new group is expected to be created at a meeting to discuss the future of the seafront centre at 7pm in the Town Council Chambers in Jaycroft Road.

Town Clerk Eileen Shaw told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The purpose of the meeting is to appoint a small working party of about seven persons actively engaged in tourism to come up with suggestions as to how the TIC could be manned in the future.”

“It is likely that such a working party would include a representative from one of the major holiday villages, one from one of the smaller holiday outlets and one from the B&B outlets, plus representatives from the transport industry, the business sector and the district and town councils.”

“It is hoped that such a working party will be in a position to report back within the next two to three months.”

“At this stage it is not anticipated that funding will be a matter to be considered at the meeting – rather a question of ‘throwing a life line’ to allow the TIC to continue to operate whilst a long term practical solution is sought.”

Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported in November that the centre’s future could be in doubt due to district council funding cuts. The centre also received a sought-after mystery shopper award, as reported here.
