Former Defence Secretary Tom King visited Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (April 24th) when he joined David Heathcoat-Amory for an election walkabout.

Lord King, who was MP for Bridgwater from 1970 until 2001, gave his support to Mr Heathcoat-Amory during his visit to the town.

The duo met residents and business owners along the town's High Street, discussed regeneration plans for the town in the wake of the recent £159,000 funding boost, and also made a visit to the seafront headquarters of BARB to see the town's two rescue hovercrafts.

The pair also visited several businesses along Burnham High Street, including Roly's Fudge, Julians Gift Shop, the Newquay Pasty Company shop and Seafoods fishmongers.

Lord King and Mr Heathcoat-Amory met Alex Turco and John Edwards of Burnham's Civic Pride group to hear about the latest plans to regenerate the High Street.

The MP said: "I am very pleased that the South West Regeneration Development Agency has sensibly given Burnham compensation and am looking forward to seeing the regeneration plans moving forward."

The pair also visited BARB, where they heard about the ongoing fundraising campaign to raise £60,000 for a new hovercraft.

Mr Heathcoat-Amory recently donated £1,000 towards the campaign.

Tom King held the posts of Employment Secretary and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, and he also served as Defence Secretary under Prime Minister John Major during the Gulf War in 1991.

Lord King told "David is an excellent MP for this area who has done a lot for businesses and groups in this town. I am very happy to give my support to him."

The other candidates standing in May's election in the Wells constituency are the Liberal Democrats' Tessa Munt, Labour's Andy Merryfield, UKIP's Jake Baynes, the British National Party's Richard Boyce and the Green Party's Chris Briton.
