Highbridge school’s volleyball team become South West Champions

-

Volleyball players from Highbridge’s King Alfred School competed in the South West Junior Mini Volleyball Championships at the weekend.

The tournament, held at Taunton’s Castle School and Somerset College of Arts and Technology, attracted teams from across the region covering Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire.

King Alfred School entered four teams in three different age groups who performed well over a series of games.

The Under 12s – Emily Bailey, Sian Marshall and Gemma Smith – had one of their best results of all season and played brilliantly to finish runners-up.

The U13s had two teams and both were very competitive.

The ‘B’ team of Lucy Cox, Chloe Morley, Paige Downie and Tia Cohen was placed third overall.

The ‘A’ team of Ruby Barrett, Rachael Butler, Abi Connick and Georgia Edmundson finished joint first on 23 points, so the result went to points difference.

Unfortunately, despite beating the other joint winners, they were six points adrift over nine games which left them beaten very narrowly to the runners-up position.

An experienced Year 9 team comprising of Fabbiha Tarafdar, Amy Curran and Kerri Smith kept true to form and won all nine of their games throughout the day.

They became overall winners and South West Champions – ending a fantastic season for the King Alfred’s Volleyball club.
