Burnham Coastguards called to bridge jumper in Bridgwater

-

A team of four Coastguards was called to the roadway over the river in Western Way at 6.10pm after police raised concerns for the welfare of a man who was spotted jumping from the tall road bridge into the water below.

Burnham Coastguard Officer Stuart Browning told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We were called to assist police in dealing with the situation.”

“Fortunately, the man managed to get out of the river himself despite the fast-flowing water conditions and bridge’s height.”

The tide was quickly coming in at the time, with the result that the man could easily have been swept upstream and into difficulty.
