A huge windfall of almost £5,000 was handed out to nineteen local good causes in Burnham-On-Sea on Wednesday evening (March 9th) when the town’s carnival committee presented the proceeds of last year’s collections.

Carnival President Malcolm Borland and Carnival Queen Anna Kevan handed out £4,950 of cheques at the Ritz Social Club to members of those groups who helped with street collections at last November’s event.

Malcom thanked the organisations for their support, telling Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are very grateful for the help of these local groups, without whom we would not have a carnival. We rely on helpers for marshalling and collecting.”

The groups benefiting included Burnham Lions (£1,500), Worle Lions (£100), BEES (£250), the Youth Hostel Association (£350), Burnham Rotary Club (£500), Sedgemoor Explorers (£100), British Heart Foundation (£100), St John Ambulance (£500), Burnham In Bloom (£100), Burnham Scouts (£150), PGM School (£200), Burnham Community Centre (£100), Children’s Hospice South West (£250), Homestart (£150), Army Cadets (£100), Weston Harriers (£100), Clic Sargent (£200), Fei Lung Kwan kung fu group (£100) and Weare Scouts (£100).

Carnival Treasurer John Hodgson told Burnham-On-Sea.com that collections were down by £1,400 from the previous year’s carnival due to a combination of poor weather and the depressed financial climate.
