In photos: Burnham-On-Sea Xmas shopping night hailed a success

Santa was among the shoppers who visited Burnham-On-Sea's inaugural Christmas shopping evening, held on Friday (December 2nd).

Over 40 businesses in Burnham town centre took part in the coordinated late night opening until 9pm in an effort to attract people to do their festive shopping.

Organisers hailed the event a success, despite wet weather reducing the number of shoppers. "Many of the shops and businesses who took part had a good evening," one of the organisers, Phil Hemming, told

"It was a great first year and we can build on it for next time. Plans are already being drawn up for a similar event in 2012."

Father Christmas dropped in during the evening, courtesy of Burnham Lions, who had their charity collection float on display.

Burnham's Mayor and Mayoress were also among the shoppers, and there was also live music by Burnham band Rustique outside GW Hurleys.

The initiative was trader led, with the support of Burnham Chamber of Trade and Burnham Lions Club.
