Ceremony marks start of £4.6m Highbridge school building work

-

A ‘ground breaking’ ceremony was held in Highbridge on Friday (July 8th) to mark the start of a year-long construction project to build Churchfield Primary School’s new multi-million pound classrooms.

VINCI Construction UK Limited has been awarded a £4.6million contract to construct the 14-classroom school that will eventually accommodate 420 students – and construction is due to start next week.

Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Michael Clarke, County Councillor John Woodman, headteacher Wendy Nelder and governor Rosemarie Parsons joined pupils at Friday’s ceremony.

Cllr John Osman, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This new state-of-the-art, purpose-built primary school will bring huge advantages to the community, reinforcing the Council’s commitment to provide the best possible facilities and learning environment for our children in Somerset.”

And Wendy Nelder, Head of Churchfield School, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Our staff and pupils are very excited that work is about to begin. While our temporary classrooms are working out fine, it will be great to have a new, modern school ready for the autumn term 2012.”

Steve Vorres, Regional Director of VINCI Construction UK’s Building Division South West, added: “This new school is an excellent contribution to the educational success of our local school children. VINCI Construction UK is delighted to be working on such an innovative project that will be of significant benefit to the community, and one that we know that they will be extremely proud of.”
