River Brue crane-in marks start of Burnham's annual sailing season

Two huge cranes towered over Burnham-On-Sea's Sailing Club on Thursday morning (March 24th) when the annual spring 'crane-in' saw 23 boats hoisted into the River Brue.

The annual tradition is arranged each Spring by the Sailing Club when the crafts are lifted out of the boat yard and into the river in time for the start of the sailing season.

It was an early start for the club's members, with the operation to move the boats beginning at 6am to fit in with the high tide.

"The pontoons were shrouded in mist first thing, affecting visibility, but it soon cleared and we had perfect calm conditions for the rest of the morning," Vice President Ken Sowden told

"There were a few small hitches, but nothing major, and the whole job was finished by mid-day."
