'Steady trickle' of Burnham and Highbridge voters go to the polls

Voters in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge headed to polling stations on Thursday (May 5th) to cast their votes in the parish and district council elections.

After many weeks of campaigning, the candidates now face a nervous wait until the results are announced today (Friday) - they will be published here on

Tellers outside polling stations in Burnham and Highbridge said there had been a 'steady trickle' of voters throughout the day, with the evening busier than the daytime as residents voted after work.

Today's count is being held in Bridgwater Town Hall starting at 9.30am.

The district elections will be counted first on the basis of single member wards first, then double-member wards, then three member wards.

The wards will be counted six at time and the results will be given on a rolling basis. It is anticipated that the district will be finished counting about 1pm, although this depends on percentage turnout and any recounts.

There were 87 polling booths in 71 buildings across Sedgemoor and, across the district, there were 125 candidates standing for 48 seats.
