Somerset County Council has this week warned residents in the Burnham-On-Sea area to be on the alert for a letter scam involving ‘Euromillion Lottery International’.

Somerset Trading Standards has received reports of letters being posted to residents, informing them that they have won a large amount of money.

“People are asked to fax through a completed form after which you are invited to phone a number. At this point, you will be asked to open an account to receive the winnings for which there is a charge of several thousand pounds,” county council spokeswoman Elizabeth Kulh told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“There have been hundreds of complaints about this scam, and Trading Standards warn that residents in Somerset are now being targeted.”

The County Council advice is to simply destroy or bin the letter and take no further action. For further advice, contact Consumer Direct on 0845 04 05 06.
