The owner of this car says he got the ‘shock of his life’ when the vehicle dramatically burst into flames outside a Burnham-On-Sea pub today (Thursday, July 21st).

Burnham firefighters rushed to the car park of the Dunstan House in Love Lane at 12.50pm after the VW Golf suffered an engine fault, sparking the blaze.

Fire crews used a hose reel jet and breathing apparatus to bring the fire under control by 1.20pm.

The motorist, who asked to remain anonymous, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I was driving into Burnham after a trip to Wookey Hole when I noticed a burning smell and then saw smoke from the engine compartment.”

“I swerved over into the pub car park and had the shock of my life when the car burst into flames. The fire crew got here really quickly and were great.”

A fire spokesman added: “The fire started after an electrical fault within the engine compartment and left the vehicle severely damaged by flames and heat.”
