30 golf teams hit the greens for annual Brean charity tournament

Over thirty teams took part in the annual Charity Pro-Am Golf Tournament at Brean Golf Club on Tuesday (May 10th).

Local teams did well in this year’s event by managing scoop the top awards in the competition, which was held to raise money for three charities.

The good causes benefiting were The Injured Jockeys Fund, St Margaret’s Hospice Taunton and The Alzheimer’s Society.

Many of the teams on the day were led by a National Hunt jockey or trainer or a selection of local PGA golf professionals.

The winners were the Brean Golf Club team, ably led by Club Captain Dave Bradley. He was joined in the formidable quartet by Tony Richards, Pete Dunn and Paul Jones as they amassed a total of 90 points.

All four played very well, with birdies and eagles flooding their scorecard which not surprisingly saw them run crowned as winners of the Tom Childs Memorial Trophy.

The runners-up spot proved to be a much closer run thing and it saw the two Brean PGA professionals going head-to-head.

With a better back nine score, the Andrew March led Brean Golf Club Ladies team – which comprised of Jenny Vaughan, Shelia Rouse and Gail Mason – came out on top after the countback on 83 points.

Having to settle for third was David Haines and his team representing Burnham Golf Range made up of Mike Porter, Terry Edwards and Brian Warner.

Burnham-On-Sea’s Watermark Financial Solutions have featured in the prizes prominently in recent years and they continued that trend by taking fourth on 82 points with Mark Woods being joined this time by Jim Vearncombe, Robin Griffiths and Richard Catton.

Rounding out the prize positions was a team named ‘Billy the Kids. The team moniker has horse racing connections and was led by jockey David Crosse, along with Brean members Eamonn Wynne, Tony Higgins and Jason Kidley who handed in a card totalling 80 points.

The winners all received their spoils at the presentation in the Tavern at Brean Leisure Park with the day being concluded by David Haines performing an impressive golf trick shot show for all present.

Andrew March, Brean Golf Club’s PGA professionalm, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The day ran smoothly and despite a spell of wet weather for the afternoon players, a good day was had by all.”

Firstly Brean Leisure Park, the House family and Bob Nicholson for running the event and the hospitality extended to all present, Deidre Wheadon for the smooth organisation, Robin Williams and his team of green staff for the superb presentation of the golf course which was met with unanimous praise, the jockeys and PGA Pros who took part, Roger Williams for performing the starter’s duties and finally to all the sponsors for supporting what has now become one of the most popular events on the golfing calendar in the area. The countdown has already started to next year’s event!”
