270 runners took part in Burnham-On-Sea’s annual Half Marathon today (Sunday, October 2nd) despite sweltering weather.

Mark Wills from Yeovil won the event in a good time of one hour, 20 minutes and 16 seconds despite searing temperatures of 27°C (80.6°F). Full results

The starting gun was fired at 11am at Burnham’s BASC Ground and the runners wended their way along Love Lane and Queens Drive, before turning left along the A38 towards Brent Knoll.

They then paced through East Brent, Lympsham, Wick Road and Red Road, before returning to Burnham along Berrow Road – with a detour along Saxondale Avenue and Links Gardens to avoid the area where emergency sewer repairs are ongoing.

Winner Mark Wills, pictured right with the second and third finishers, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The high temperatures meant the conditions were very challenging, but I was delighted to win. There was good support all along the route.”

A separate fun run was also held for local children and was well supported by over 20 youngsters.

Organiser Brian Beale, from Burnham Harriers, who oversaw Sunday’s event, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s been another successful event despite the hot weather and the need for a diversion along the route.”

“We’re pleased with the number of runners and thank everyone who took part and helped organise it for their support.”
