M5 re-opened after crash causes queues of up to 16 miles at Burnham-On-Sea

-

Queuing traffic of up to 16 miles developed on the southbound carriageway of the M5 past Burnham-On-Sea this morning (Saturday, May 28th) after a serious two-vehicle accident shut the motorway for almost two hours.

A car and caravan were badly damaged, as pictured, after they crossed the carriageway and overturned between junction 23 at Bridgwater North and junction 24 at Bridgwater South, causing all three lanes of the M5 to be closed by police at around 8am.

The motorway re-opened at 9.45am although it was several hours before traffic returned to normal.

“Traffic was being diverted off the M5 onto the A38, causing further queues of slow moving traffic through Burnham and Highbridge,” a police spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

Fire, police and ambulance crews were called to the scene. Queues of Bank Holiday weekend traffic stretched back from Bridgwater to Weston.
