Michael Eavis to open Burnham’s new tourist information centre

-

Glastonbury Festival boss Michael Eavis will perform the official opening of Burnham-On-Sea’s new tourist information centre later this month.

Mr Eavis, who is a strong supporter of Somerset tourism and a frequent visitor to Burnham, will lead the opening ceremony outside the centre on The Esplanade at mid-day on Thursday, April 14th.

Sedgemoor District Council is currently handing the centre over to the newly-formed community group BIARS (Burnham Information And Rescue Support), with the lease due to be signed this week.

“We are delighted that Michael will be opening Burnham’s tourist information centre on April 14th after many months of hard work by the BIARS team behind the scenes,” said a spokesman.

Almost £7,000 has been pledged to BIARS to help it run the seafront facilities and the new organisation is seeking to raise £10,000 by the early summer.

The future of the seafront centre was plunged into doubt during 2009 when the cash-strapped district council announced it could no longer afford to run it. BIARS came forward to save it and aims to make it profitable again.

The centre will be operated by almost 30 volunteers, but it still requires more people to join its ranks. Anyone who can spare an hour or more on a regular basis to help is invited to get in contact via the official BIARS web page on Burnham-On-Sea.com here.
