Olympic Flame could travel through Highbridge next May

-

A huge community celebration will be held in Highbridge next year if The Olympic Flame comes through the town.

The Olympic torch is due to arrive in the UK from Greece on 18th May 2012 and will visit Taunton on 21st May and Bristol on 22nd May as part of its tour around the UK.

There is growing optimism that the torch will travel through Highbridge, along the A38 on its way to Bristol, although the final details are not due to be announced until this autumn.

Burnham and Highbridge town councillors this week discussed how they would like to mark the occasion if the flame does come through the town.

Highbridge Town Councillor Alan Miller is working on plans for a community event to celebrate.

“We won’t know for sure whether the torch is coming here for a few months yet but we have started to look at where and when we would hold a celebratory event – it would be a great moment for the town,” he said.

The Olympic Torch will leave Land’s End, Cornwall, the morning after reaching the UK and will then travel 8,000 miles around the country, making 70 stops. The full community-level route will be announced in November 2011.
