photos: Stuck pigeon rescued by Burnham fire crew and RSPCA
firefighters carried out one of their more unusual rescues on
Tuesday evening (April 12th) when they were asked by the RSPCA
to help retrieve a bird trapped in netting on top of a roof.
used a tall ladder to safely reach the pigeon, which was tangled
up in netting above the Nationwide Building Society in Victoria
Street, as pictured here.
cutters were used to release the bird before it was taken away
by RSPCA carers for treatment shortly after 7pm.
carer Sue Dobson, who took the bird away for treatment, told Burnham-On-Sea.com:
"Several concerned residents let us know the distressed bird
was trapped. Because it was so high up we called on the fire brigade
to help and were very grateful for their assistance."
Burnham fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "We get around
two or three call-outs a year like this and unless we help there's
a risk that someone else might try climbing up to reach the bird
and put their own welfare in jeopardy. We were happy to retrieve
resident Joe Montgomery, who called out the RSPCA, said he was
relieved to see the bird safely captured. "It had been stuck
in the netting for well over a day and was clearly in a bad way,"
