A group of young gymnasts from Highbridge is in Portugal this weekend competing against countries from across Europe.

Fourteen of the gymnasts from Monarchs Acrobatic Club, which is based at King Alfred School, are in Portugal to take part in the MAIA International Acro Cup 2011, which includes teams from Belguim, Italy, France, Holland and Portugal.

“Over 250 gymnasts are performing a series of artistic acrobatic routines, demonstrating strength and agility, balance and confidence as they strive for a place in the finals and a position on the podium on Sunday,” said club spokeswoman Amanda Hoskins.

The event takes place over three days and is being shown on local Portuguese television and can be viewed online at www.acroteam.org.
