Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards search for man crossing river estuary

-

Two teams of Coastguards from Burnham-On-Sea and Weston were called to the River Axe next to Brean Down today (Friday, April 1st) amid concern for the welfare of a person trying to cross the treacherous estuary.

Coastguards searched the banks of the river at 11.40am after a walker raised concerns about a man attempting to cross to Weston from Brean.

“Burnham Coastguards searched the south side and Weston Coastguards searched the north side of the river,” Burnham Coastguard officer Ian Jefferies told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“After a thorough search, the man was found safe and well, having crossed safely across the sluice gates near Brean’s Diamond Farm.”

“We strongly advise people never to try and cross the Axe next to Brean Down. The fast-flowing currents at high tide and the treacherous mud at low tide make it very dangerous.”
