Lifeboat crew retrieves 'mystery object' from sea amid safety fears

Burnham-On-Sea's lifeboat crew performed one of their more unusual rescues on Monday (April 4th) when they were called out to retrieve this large metallic object floating in the sea.

Three crewmembers in wetsuits waded into the water off Burnham beach to bring the mystery object, pictured here, onto the shore.

It followed concerns that it was a danger to water craft in Bridgwater Bay.

RNLI spokesman Mike Lang told "The object was deemed to be a hazard to shipping, so we moved it out of the water and onto the jetty above the high tide mark. It was very heavy and metallic so would have caused a nasty gash in any boat that struck it."

"We think it was probably part of a ship's fire prevention equipment, but no-one is 100 per cent sure."
