Man arrested after town councillor’s car damaged in seafront smash

-

A man has been arrested following a crash on Burnham-On-Sea seafront at the weekend that left a councillor’s car badly damaged.

Police said on Monday that a 35 year-old man had been arrested following the collision, which badly damaged Cllr Neville Jones’ parked car, pictured here.

Police spokesman Martin Dunscombe told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A 35 year-old male from the West Midlands was arrested on suspicion of drink driving following the incident. He has been released pending further enquiries.”

As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com here at the weekend, officers were called to The Esplanade early on Sunday when well-known town and district councillor Neville Jones dialled 999 to alert police to the incident.

Police found a vehicle had slammed into the councillor’s blue Toyota outside Quantock Court, shunting it into the back of a white van parked a few metres away.

Cllr Jones told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The crash has been a great shock to us – the car has suffered serious damage at the front and back and is probably a write-off. The white van parked in front of mine was also damaged.”

He added: “This is the third accident along this stretch of The Esplanade in recent years. It highlights the need for some traffic calming measures to be introduced here. A set of speed bumps on the road to slow down vehicles would cost just a few hundred pounds for the County Council to install.”

Meanwhile, anyone with any information regarding the incident is still asked to contact Burnham Police on 0845 456 7000 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
