Burnham-On-Sea group for partially-sighted folds after 30 years

-

A once-thriving Burnham-On-Sea group that supported partially-sighted people in the town has closed down this week after running for almost 30 years.

Dwindling numbers of members and a struggle for funding has resulted in the Somerset Sight Burnham Social Club folding.

The club’s leader, Audrey Lomax, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We used to have 30 members as recently as 2008 when people came to our meetings from as far afield as Cheddar and Wedmore, but the numbers have tailed off recently.”

“Sadly, several members have found it increasingly difficult to travel and without lots of members we also struggled with funding.”

The group – which met monthly at Highbridge’s St John’s Church Hall – gathered for its final meeting this week, as pictured, when a cream tea was held amid much reminiscing about the past 30 years.

Another group, the Burnham and Highbridge Visually Impaired Friendship Club, is welcoming the group’s members. It meets every Friday between 10am-12pm in St John’s Church Hall, Highbridge, and is next due to meet in September after its summer break.
