Strike latest: Schools in Burnham-On-Sea area hit by pensions strike

-

Staff at several schools in the Burnham-On-Sea area joined a nationwide strike to protest about changes to their pensions today (Wednesday, November 30th).

Burnham Infants School, Highbridge’s Churchfield School and East Huntspill Primary School were closed. And Highbridge’s King Alfred School was also closed to pupils in years 7-11 for the day.

Meanwhile, emergency 999 calls will still be answered during the strike, but South Western Ambulance Service has urged people to only call if absolutely necessary since some of its staff will be striking.

Unions voted in favour of the strike earlier this month after rejecting the Government’s pension reforms which are set to raise the retirement age and workers’ contribution levels.
