Huge crowds turned out to watch leading author Sir Terry Pratchett switch on Burnham-On-Sea’s Christmas lights on Saturday (November 26th).

Sir Terry and the Mayor, Cllr Michael Clarke, hit a plunger at 4.45pm to light up the town for the festive season.

An afternoon of festive entertainment took place outside the Victoria Hotel in Victoria Street featuring schoolchildren from St Andrew’s School and St Joseph’s School performing Christmas songs, followed by the Mudlarks Community Choir and local rock group Vermin. Father Christmas arrived in style onboard a train specially built by Burnham Lions Club. Click here for online video coverage of the switch-on.

Sir Terry – who was joined on stage by Burnham’s Mayor, the town’s Carnival Queen and Princesses – told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s been a great honour to switch on the lights and I thank everyone for the warm welcome.”

Other attractions included the BEES (Burnham Excellent Entertainment Society) providing face painting, displays by local services including BARB, Burnham Police and the fire brigade, plus Burnham Lions.

Rhonda Mills, Chairman of Burnham’s Chamber of Trade, which organised the event, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I’m delighted with how it went and we were really pleased to see such huge crowds turning out to watch the switch-on.”

“Sir Terry was superb – and we’re very grateful to him supporting the start of our festive season here in Burnham. It was a superb afternoon for the town.”
