Costa Coffee given final go-ahead to open in Burnham-On-Sea

Controversial plans to turn a town centre shop in Burnham-On-Sea into a new Costa Coffee cafe have been granted final approval by Sedgemoor District Council this week.

The council's planning department has given consent to South West Coffee Ltd to open a Costa Coffee franchise in the High Street building previously occupied by Sanders greengrocers.

Costa intends to open the new cafe this autumn and the new store will have opening hours of 6.30am - 8pm. recently reported that several food retailers in the town are concerned that the new cafe will hurt their trade and several called for more controls to be introduced on limiting the number of cafes in Burnham.

However, only two formal objections were lodged with Sedgemoor District Council - both relating to concerns about the impact of Costa on the High Street's future.

Burnham and Highbridge Town Council gave the plans a thumbs-up, as we reported here, and the district council also found no planning grounds to refuse the application.

Sanders greengrocers closed last year, as we reported here, and the property has been vacant ever since.
