Funeral held for Dylan Cecil who died after Burnham jetty accident

-

Family and friends wore red and blue at Tuesday’s funeral of the four-year-old boy who drowned after falling off Burnham-On-Sea’s jetty.

The funeral of Dylan Cecil was held at St Mary’s Church in Kettering, at which the youngster’s Sonic The Hedgehog themed coffin arrived in a white carriage pulled by two horses.

The family asked for those attending to wear red and blue in honour of Dylan’s favourite cartoon characters and his favourite football team, Kettering Town.

More than 100 people were in the congregation, including family and friends, plus representatives from Burnham’s Coastguard, BARB hovercraft and RNLI lifeboat crews who tried to find Dylan after he went missing.

His father, Darren Cecil, was one of the pall-bearers who lifted his son’s blue coffin, which had a picture of Sonic on the side and a football scarf draped over it, out of the white horse-drawn carriage and then carried it into the church.

Afterwards, vehicles came to a halt as the carriage carrying Dylan was driven slowly from the church, followed by his parents and family in cars behind, as he was taken for a private burial.

Among the wreaths at the funeral was an anchor-shaped one from Burnham Coastguards plus others from BARB, the RNLI and local beach wardens.

Donations in memory of Dylan, whose body was taken to be cremated after the service, were asked to be made to BARB (Burnham Area Rescue Boat).

Dylan’s parents thanked the local community and rescue services in Burnham for their support.

The toddler was visiting his grandparents when he fell into the water from Burnham’s jetty at around 6pm on Sunday August 19th.

He disappeared from view when he was pulled under the sea water. His parents both attempted to save him by diving into the water but they were unable to find him.

Dylan’s body was found by a member of the public four days later – and less than half a mile away from where he was last seen – at Burnham Sailing Club.
