160 homes without power and A38 closed after power line blaze

-

The A38 was closed and over 160 homes in Brent Knoll were left without power for almost five hours last night (Monday) after a power line caught fire.

The A38 was shut in both ways between the junction at the Fox and Goose pub and Burnham’s M5 roundabout at Edithmead following the incident at 6.30pm.

Eyewitness Max Stacey took this photo of the Western Power Distribution crews trying to extinguish the sparking transformer and power line.

Since the pylon is close to the A38, police shut the busy route while the scene was made safe.

The incident caused a black-out in Brent Knoll to 160 properties until power was fully restored at around 11.30pm.

The nearby Fox and Goose pub was left in the dark, but its owner Sue Lucksom was putting a brave face on it. “We haven’t been able to serve any hot food and it has hurt trade, but accidents happen and nothing could have been done to avoid it,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

A spokesman for Western Power Distribution apologised for the inconvenience.
