A huge crowd of up to 10,000 spectators lined Burnham’s seafront to watch a spectacular fireworks display on Sunday night.

The dazzling 20-minute programme saw 5,000 fireworks launched into the air, accompanied by music, from the jetty and beach.

The crowds had to wait an extra 30 minutes after Skyburst, the firm that runs the display on behalf of the Town Council, delayed the start on health and safety grounds.

The firm’s Matthew Tosh told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The tide was higher than expected and a number of last-minute safety checks could not go ahead until the water receded, but it didn’t spoil the display at all.”

Burnham’s Mayor, Ken Smout, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was a fantastic show that exceeded expectations. It was wonderful to see such a huge crowd on the seafront and we thank them for their patience in waiting for the start.”

“The fireworks are great for business in Burnham and drawing visitors into the town.”

There was a poignant moment in the middle of the display when poppy shapes were created in the sky – a reference to today’s remembrance ceremonies.
