Weather-hit Bank Holiday fete in Burnham raises £900 for hospital

-

Wet weather led to Burnham-On-Sea’s annual Bank Holiday hospital fete being cancelled on Monday and replaced with a smaller, indoor event.

Organisers from the Friends of Burnham Hospital made the decision early to cancel the traditional Manor Gardens event amid heavy rain and gusty wind.

Instead, a smaller indoor fete was held in Burnham’s St Andrew’s Church Hall, which earned over £900.

However, Tony Deahl, Chairman of the Friends of Burnham Hospital told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Although the weather deterred large crowds, several hundred people braved the elements to support the hospital. The event made a profit of approximately £900, less than a quarter of the normal total when the fete takes place in the Manor Gardens.”

“We are sure that we made the right decision to abandon the Manor Gardens in favour of St Andrew’s Hall as the intermittent rain and gusty wind would have made an outdoor event very unpleasant.”

“Although we did not make a large amount of money we were able to make some to help make life more pleasant for both patients and staff at the hospital. We also signed up many more Friends.”

Tony said he was grateful to those who took the trouble to come along to support the town’s hospital and he also thanked the large number of volunteers who made the fete possible.
