Burnham-On-Sea Lifeguard Academy makes a splash at first contest

-

Six students from Burnham-On-Sea Swim & Sports Lifeguard Academy attended their first ever competitive lifesaving championships last weekend – and all of them came away with medals.

The group competed in the RLSS UK Lifesaving Championship Regional Heats for the South West of England in Bristol.

Head coach Andy Holt said he was delighted with their achievement. “The academy was competing against seasoned teams from throughout the South West of England and caused quite a stir on their debut! Alan Sutherland, the RLSS SW club development officer, visited the Academy yesterday to personally congratulate the team and see them go through their training paces.”

Steven Howe and Callum Richards gained a silver medal in the ‘boys 14 and under pairs’, and narrowly missed getting selected to represent the region at the national championships.

Paris Hazelton-Cavill and Hannah Palmer won a bronze medal in the ‘girls 14 and under division’ while Chris Wood and Nathan Stiles captured a bronze in the boys 14 and under division.

All six students attend the Elite Lifeguard Academy for students aged 13+. They train on Monday evenings from 5.30-6.30pm.

The Academy also runs Rookie Lifeguard sessions for children from 8 years +. If you are interested in lifeguarding and would like to join the team, contact the academy on 01278 785909 for further information.
