Ten people were hurt in a six vehicle collision which closed the M5 motorway today (Friday), causing long queues of traffic between Weston and Burnham-On-Sea.

The accident happened at around 4.20pm and caused major delays for rush hour commuters travelling along the northbound carriageway near Weston.

Police said two motorists had been taken to hospital by ambulance, while eight others were treated by paramedics and fire crews at the scene.

Queues of traffic built up six miles to Burnham-On-Sea at junction 22 with delays of over two hours reported by some motorists on social networking sites.

The road conditions were very slippery at the time of the collision following heavy rain although the cause of the collision was not immediately clear.

Debris and oil was sent over the roadway, prompting an extensive clean-up that led to the delays continuing throughout this evening.
