These were the scenes on the M5 motorway at Burnham-On-Sea on Monday (December 31st) after a car crashed into the central reservation, causing long delays to motorists.

Two lanes of the southbound carriageway between Burnham and Dunball were closed following the crash at 1.25pm involving a green Audi.

Two people inside escaped injury after the collision, which occurred during heavy rainfall.

Police spokesman Martin Dunscombe told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The car collided with the central reservation and police, fire and an ambulance were sent to the scene.”

It was confirmed that the two occupants inside had been unhurt. Two fire crews from Burnham were sent to the scene and a hose reel jet was used to wash down the road and make the vehicle safe.

The Highways Agency directed traffic around the scene and long queues of traffic backed up for four miles beyond junction 22 at Burnham. The motorway re-opened at 2.30pm but traffic was still very slow at 3.15pm.
