Police investigations continuing into M5 motorway tragedy

-

A police inquiry into the cause of last November’s M5 motorway crash in Somerset in which seven people died and another 51 were injured, is continuing.

Reports in some national media over the past few days have suggested the investigation had concluded that smoke from a nearby fireworks display at Taunton Rugby Club was not to blame for the multi-vehicle collision.

However, police issued a statement on Tuesday (March 13th) to confirm that no conclusions have yet been made and that the investigation is continuing.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: “There have been a number of media claims over the weekend concerning the M5 collision in November 2011.”

“Contrary to these reports, we would like to make it clear that we have not issued any public statements about the conclusions of our investigation.”

“All possible contributory factors are being fully investigated, including environmental factors, weather conditions, driver behaviour, vehicle condition and distraction.”

“In the fullness of time, the investigation findings will be made public, however at this stage it is difficult to give an exact timescale.”

“In the meantime, we would ask that people are sensitive to the feelings of the loved ones of those who were killed or injured in the collision and refrain from speculating about the cause.”
