Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Martin Cox, tied the knot on Saturday (November 17th).

A large congregation, including the Mayor and town councillors, attended the wedding service at Burnham’s St Andrew’s Church.

Martin met Arlene, 38, while studying Health and Social Care at Bridgwater College and working part-time as a Health Care Assistant at BUPA. He works at Burnham Lodge Nursing Home.

“They began their courtship in August 2010 but many thought it would not last as they were totally different people from diverse backgrounds. However, on Boxing Day 2010, Martin gave Arlene a diamond eternity ring,” said Cllr Neville Jones, who gave away the bride at Saturday’s wedding because Arlene’s parents were unable to attend.

“When she finished her studying in June 2011 and returned to the Philippines, the couple continued to keep in touch over the internet.”

“In October 2011 Arlene enrolled to study for an exam in English and passed with flying colours. Martin flew to stay in the Philippines in April and May this year when all the members of Arlene’s family were excited to meet Martin.”

Martin made his proposal during the visit, leading to this week’s wedding. Reverend Graham Witts led the service and a reception was held afterwards at Lakeside Holiday Park in Burnham.
