MP
Tessa Munt signs Holocaust Memorial Book of Commitment
Burnham-On-Sea's
MP has this week signed a 'Book of Commitment', pledging her backing
to Holocaust Memorial Day and honouring those who died during
the Holocaust.
This
Friday, 27th January, marks the 67th anniversary of the liberation
of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazi concentration and extermination
camp which is the site of the largest mass murder in history.
A
short memorial service will take place next to Highbridge's Frank
Foley Statue in Market Street on Friday at 12 midday to commemorate
the event, organised by Highbridge War Memorial Trust and members
of Highbridge's clergy.
To
mark the anniversary, the Holocaust Educational Trust asked Tessa
to sign a Book of Commitment to honour those who were persecuted
and killed during the Holocaust, and to be active in speaking
out against prejudice and bigotry today.
Tessa
paid tribute to the extraordinary men and women who, having survived
the Holocaust, work through the Holocaust Educational Trusts
Outreach programme to educate young people about what they endured.
Tessa
told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "Holocaust Memorial Day marks the
anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and
is an important opportunity to remember the victims of this genocide.
I encourage everyone to remember this anniversary and commit to
speaking up and speaking out against racism, hatred
and prejudice wherever they are encountered today."
Karen
Pollock, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said:
"We are proud that Tessa is supporting Holocaust Memorial
Day again this year. It is vital that we both remember and learn
from the appalling events of the Holocaust as well as ensuring
that we continue to challenge all forms of bigotry."
